FOLLOW THE READER: Waikoloa restaurant a value on Big Island
My wife and I recently spent a week at the Hilton in Waikoloa on the Big Island's Kohala Coast. After half of a week of spending $50 a pop for sandwiches and beer, I left the resort and found the best restaurant in the area: the Waikoloa Beach Grill.
This independent dining room is owned and operated by chefs David Brown (fresh breads and pastries) and Stephen Tabor (on the grill). Two more hospitable and hard-working guys you will not find. With entrees about $24, prices were much more reasonable than at surrounding resorts, and the food was fantastic. The service was thoughtful, and views of a snow-capped mountain soaring above the putting green (the restaurant is right on the No. 1 tee of the Waikoloa Beach golf course) were just as nice as the tall, perfect bloody Marys.
The lunch was superb, mostly due to the rolls and sandwich breads (not that sandwiches are your only choice). The varied dinner menu included fresh fish and a Coquille St. Jacques that would make Julia Childs proud. Desserts were unbelievable.

During our stay at Waikoloa Beach the first week of December, another couple suggested we try the Waikoloa Beach Grill, and are we glad that we did. The restaurant is located within walking distance from the Marriott Waikoloa Beach Resort and also quite close to the Hilton Waikoloa Village. It has a comfortable bar and the dining room is tastefully decorated with paintings from a local artist.
Our meal started with their crab cakes which was primarily crab and not filler. The freshness of the crab was obvious. The presentation was also both classy and tasty. My wife enjoyed her lamb chops, which were cooked exactly as she requested. I had their smoked pork chop which was like none other I had ever had. As their menu states, and because the chop is smoked, it has a flavor reminincent of fresh baked ham, yet you know immediately that your eating something much more complex in flavor and texture. Presentations of each of these dishes was above the norm.
Not to be overlooked was the warm and friendly staff...from the bartender to Chef David who came out from the kitchen and took a personal interest in our dining experience. Lastly, the desserts we had were second to none and a pleasant way to end our meal. I have attached a picture so you can see the artistry for yourself. And it tasted even better than it looks.
Our only regret was discovering this place on our last night in Hawaii. We will be back in six months, so don't change a thing!

I recently went to the Waikoloa Beach Grill for dinner and I must say that it was an awesome experience. The chefs, to our understanding had defected from the Hilton just down the road and boy what a great move! The food was so flavorful and it was so flavorful that you won't find any salt and pepper shakers on the table! What ever you do, you must must must must must try the Macadamia Nut Pie, a personal favorite! The Beach Grill's ambience is cozy with a nice view of the golf course. The service is great and if you ever get the chance, see Denise, our server for the evening. She was informative and quite pleasant which is a nice change from the typical, "what'ya havin'?!". As I mentioned before, it's located at the golf course with ample parking. They serve lunch and dinner there and reasonably priced! This restaurant gets two thumbs up in our books.
Isn't this pretty? Our restaurant was featured in the February 2007 edition of this Japanese magazine. I can't tell you exactly what was written, but I can describe for you what is being displayed. The entree on the black plate was that evening's fish special, the dessert in the background is the Lilikoi Cheesecake and the one in the foreground is the Strawberry Shortcake.
We have one copy of the magazine in the bookshelf -come in and ask to view it.
I blocked out the letterhead for privacy reasons, but just know that our chefs and staff truly enjoyed having them dine with us - we can't wait until they return!
Our fans come in all sizes!
Here's an article in our local Hawaii Island Journal newspaper... that's Chef Steve in the picture - someone once confused him for the bouncer. He's not that scary looking, is he?

Whats up gang! If you ever have the chance to go to the Waikoloa Beach Grill, DO IT! I just love this restaurant. The foods' 'ono, the people are friendly and the prices are reasonable. I go there on the average of once to twice a month for dinner and love every time I've gone there. It's located just across the street from the Hilton Waikoloa Village, just next to the pro shop. Parking is ample and the food is MUCH better than the Kings Course restaurant. Go check it out! It's worth your time, trust me!

Wonderful food, comparable to Roy's, but more generous portions. Deserts to knock your socks off. $$$, but worth it.
